rewrite the following sentence- no one had lived in the house for two years.

An abandoned house sat on the corner of the street. Barely able to see the house because the plants and weads are taking over the walls. The furniture inside is gathering a thick layer of dust. Spiders have taken over

My feet sank into the finely crushed up rocks as I walked along the shoreline. The tide moving up and down the seashore, as the sound of the surf roaring and crashing rang in my ears. I lather a thick layer on skin protecter as I feel myself turning bright red from the rays beaming down on me. In the distance I see a large ship drifting by

Nick Carraway:The unreliable narrator

Nick grew up in Minnesota then went to school at Yale. He fought in world war 1 and ended up moving to New York to pursue in the bond business. Nick is one of the main characters and is also the narrator of this story. He lives in west egg in a small house and is cousins with Daisy who Gatsby is in love with.

  • “I am inclined to reserve all judgements, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and made me the victim of not a few veteran bores.” Nick isn’t judgmental and doesn’t have many opinions. He keeps to himself and doesn’t share what he thinks.

  • “When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. “  Nick is saying that when he came back he was shocked by peoples lack of morals. Everyone is selfish not and all they want to do is have massive parties in there big houses. he wants thng to be organised.

  • “…wedging his tense arm imperatively under mine, Tom Buchanan compelled me from the room as though he were moving a checker to another square.” Nick feels like a checker piece and tom is the player moving him around. This shows that Nick is easily told what to do or he cant really say no.

  • “I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.”

I think that Nick is more on an observer tan rather being in the middle and having all the attention on him. He’s quite quiet and he’s attracted to the busyness of life. Nick is interested on whats going on around him

  • “Most of the time I worked…I knew the other clerks and young bond salesmen by their first names…I even had a short affair with a girl who lived in Jersey City and worked in the accounting department, but her brother began throwing mean looks in my direction…”  Nick is very career driven person and it seems that he is very close with all the people he works with. He’s passionate about his work. And he works to make a living. He cares about his work friends because he’s taking time to learn their names. He cares what people think about him, and he wants people to like him.

  • “I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known.” Nick is quite confident and up himself by thinking that he is one of the only people that he has meet. He thinks he is a really good person.
  • “They’re a rotten crowd…You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together!’ I’ve always been glad I said that. It was the only compliment I ever gave him because I disapproved of him from beginning to end.” Nick thinks that Gatsby is better than Tom and Daisy. He thinks that Tom and Daisy are a rotten crowd because all thr bad stuff that they have done but Gatsby has also done alot of bad stuff.

  • “I shook hands with him. It seemed silly not to for I felt suddenly as though I was talking to a child.” Nick sees Tom as being childish and nick was just being polite by shaking his hand.

  • “I sat there brooding on the old unknown world…” Brooding means thinking deeply about something. This shows us that Nick is a thoughtful person because he reflects on things.

At the start of the book Nick was shown to be a non judgmental person and he was seen as a person with good morals. All the characters seemed to trust Nick. But by the end of the book I saw that Nick had a lot of strong opinions on people even tho he was seen to be a non judgmental person. I think that since he moved it change him a lot. He didn’t like the environment with all the snobby upperclass rich people.

The creation of Jay Gatsby

The costume

Jay Gatsbys clothes he wears were very formal and fancy. He wore what looks like is expensive brands. When he was younger his family was poor so they wouldn’t have been able to afford lots of nice new clothes all the time. I think Gatsby takes pride in his appearance because people will Judge him on what he is wearing and he will also want to make a good impression. Tom said” I was looking at an elegant young rough neck” The quote says Tom is looking at an elegant young man which i think says that Gatsby looks well put together with nice and tidy clothes.

The props

One prop that always came up was the yellow car. I think that having a flash car was a way of Gatsby showing off to Daisy. It was a way to show that he had a-lot of money. Also I think he choose the colour yellow because its not normal to have a yellow car, it stands out. When Daisy and Gatsby meet for the first time he had lots of flowers and once again i think he was trying to impress daisy because it was the first time of them two meeting for 5 years.

The setting of the stage

Gatsbys house is very over the top and massive for one person to be living in. I think that he has set up his house to make him look richer. Everything seems like he has the top of the line stuff. He has a full on library with lots of real books and people probably will be very interested by that. His house is always tidy and it always seems empty apart from when he throws his massive parties which make the space seem very small with all the people.

The speech and dialogue

Gatsby speaks very formal and it seems very forced. He says old-sport a lot. He probably took a-lot of time to make himself sound like someone who is important. When he was younger he used to practice how he spoke which was shown in his time table of what to do in a day.

The back story

He made up all these things about himself which were very different from what was the truth. He even had evidence to prove that it was right so that people believed. Everything he told people was so easy to believe that it was true and mostly everyone believed it because no one actually knew the truth about his backstory.

Film essay

The adjustment bureau directed by George Nolfi is about David, a politician who falls in love with Elise who’s a professional dancer, but there relationship gets interrupted by the adjustment officers. The adjustment officers will determine the fate of Elise and David. But the couple fights hard to change the path that it is going on. George Nolfi used three film techniques, sound, lighting aswell as the setting to communicate the idea of fate and free will.

The film technique lighting has been used by the directer in the scene to help show the emotion that the characters are feeling. When David and Elise are running away from the adjustment officers the lighting is low-key and darker. Their emotion is scared and nervous because they don’t want to be caught by the adjustment officers. As they come out onto the balcony the clouds and sky are very dark. They are surrounded by the adjustment officers on the balcony, so they share a passionate kiss thinking its gonna be their last time they see each other. Once they finish the kiss and open up their eyes. To their surprise the officers have disappeared. The lighting changes from the dark cloudy sky to sun rising over the city. When the lighting changes so does the mood which lifts and is more happy. The directer has used this lighting change to help show the emotion of what the characters are feeling. This then gives the audience a closer look into the characters to see how they’re feeling. Lighting is connected to the idea of free will and fate because as the lighting changes from low key to high key the officers disappear from around them. This means that Elise and Davids fate is not going to be changed because the officers who found them to seperate them are now gone.

Sound has been used by the directer to create suspense, which gives the viewer an uncertainty of whats about to happen. There are many dramatic and exciting moments in the scene where where the music and sound helps change the mood. When David and Elise are on the roof top surrounded by the officers the music is dramatic and emotional which shows that Elise and David don’t really have a clue of whats just about to happen to them. When they kiss it changes to a more sad sound because they think it will be the last time they see each other. When the characters are nervous it creates a tension, and the viewers watching this feel the same emotions. All the parts of the scene where they are being chased by the officers the music and sound has a dramatic effect. But all the parts where the officers are not to be seen the sound is up beat and happier. This communicates the idea of fate and free will because the adjustment officers have control of Elise and davids life so by changing the sound from suspending to happy and upbeat when the officers leave. This shows that they have been set free and the officers are no longer in control. So they have fought hard enough for what they have wanted the whole time.

In the film the directer has used the scene and setting to display many things about the characters. When they are all on the roof of the building its shows the whole view of the city. This shows that they are alone and isolated. Not havering any places to go because the entrance to the building is blocked by the officers and they cant jump off the building. Being on top of the building shows that they have less opportunities and that they are less in control of their fate. Like i said before they have no where to go because they are surrounded. When the officers leave, David and Elise are walking down the street with shops everywhere, along with all these different people. They have many different places they can go, with all these opportunities opening up. The directer has used the top of the building to show they are in less control and they are more isolated. But when they are walking down the street they get opened up to a wide range of places, shops and people that they can talk to. This shows that they have free will because they can walk or talk to any one and anything.

In conclusion the film The Adjustment Bureau directed by George Nolfi communicated free will and fate by using lighting, sound and the scene. He did this with lighting by changing it when the officers leave from low key to high key. Which showed that they were more happier when the officers weren’t there because they had there free will. The sound was used to draw the audience in with suspence and show that there was uncertency from David and Elise. When the sound changed from suspending to happy and up beat shows the free will that David and elise. The scene shows this two because when they are on top of the building they are more isolated and have less control compared to when the are in the streets there are many opportunities for them. I think that free will is important because everyone should be able to control the decisions that they make. Free will is also having self responsibility and being able to choose the direction your path is going on.
